Gerald

‘A type Called Gerald’ or ‘Gerald’ is an experimental display typeface created as a response to the song ‘Voodoo Ray’ by Mancunian legend ‘A Guy Called Gerald’. The project was an attempt to represent a piece of music visually.

‘Gerald’ was created from vibrations of different viscous fluids on a speaker, playing ‘Voodoo Ray’. The results of the vibrations and shapes of the fluid are the building blocks of the letterforms.

Each glyph of ‘Gerald’ is synced to a 10 second increment of the song ‘Voodoo Ray.’ For example, shapes the cornflour made on the speaker in the first 10 seconds of the song make up the shapes that are present in the letter ‘a,’ while the last 10 seconds represent the letter ‘z.’
